Linesville
is named for Amos Line, who was born at Scotch Plains, New Jersey, August
21, 1776, only a little more than a month after the Declaration of Independence
was signed. He hired out in 1818 to Pennsylvania Population Company and
penetrated the wilderness to Pine Township to survey the area. He acquired
some land at the present site of Linesville and trafficked with Jabez Colt,
another agent, and built a mill off what is now Wallace Avenue Extension.
He then returned to New Jersey and married Pheobe Vale of Plainfield and
they started a family of four boys and two girls.
Before Line and company came
here, Indians lived in the area and a good many artifacts have been found
in fields by collectors. A swamp was
located
where the lake is presently located. Salt was obtained by the Indians in
the swamp and was used in trading with white men and other Indians. A few
people still have Indian last names today.
