A well-prepared syllabus is not only valuable for students, but also for the instructor. Preparing a syllabus requires the instructor to think about the course well in advance by planning learning objectives, content, and method of instruction. A syllabus lets students know on the first day of class what is expected of them so they can plan their semester. A clear, precise syllabus also lets students know the instructor takes teaching seriously.
The term "syllabus" can refer to a variety of material, including handouts which you may prefer to distribute separately or later in the semester. An effective course syllabus is more than just an information sheet. It also serves as an informal contract between the instructor and the student, giving both members objectives, projects, attendance and participation, examinations, evaluation procedures and so forth.
